Where to eat in Murcia

By: RussellMarsh

Here's a look at some of the eating places in Murcia where I like to go to eat on sometimes..

Frequently I'm just up for some Tapas and Murcia is well endowed with lots of cafes to sample lovely local versions of this traditional Spanish grub. Just the same as most Cities near the Med the choice of the fish is awesome but there's lots more than just fish here. A few of the eating places in Murcia below can be more expensive but believe me the quality of food is worth it. The quality and variety of food available in restaurants in Murcia is outstanding (largely due to the fresh local vegetables) and you should definitely find a restaurant to your taste.

Acuario (Plaza Puxmaria 1, 968219955). One of my favourites that serves a good range of excellent Murcian and other cuisine. La Cocinas del Cardenal (Plaza del Cardenal Belluga 7). This place offers a good variety of dishes to sample as Tapas at the bar or included in the fixed price menu.

Some of the best restaurants in Murcia need not be the most expensive:

Rincón del Molinero (4 Carril de los Palomas. Tel. 96 829 7148) This is an airy place with a great three-course menú del día at lunchtime at a giveaway €9! The superb variety of regional traditional food on the menu at Rincón del Molinero includes Murcian salad and great rice dishes. For the adventurous a roast lamb’s head can be ordered in advance. (Leave me out I might add ;-) Casa Gallato (33 Calle Avenida de los Pinos. Tel. 96 829 2517) This is a carnivore's heaven. Cured hams hang from the ceiling in the bar and the restaurant does knock-out steaks and chops (and big portions!). For those of you not partaking of the the Atkins diet they do have an impressive assortment of rice dishes with vegetables including the traditional "patatas a lo pobre" (poor man’s potatoes). Hermanos Rubio (3 Plaza Santa Isabel. Tel. 96 821 2040) This is a nice eaterie which offers excellent, simple fare (including a very reasonable three-course menu at lunchtime). Specialities include lamb chops with garlic and fillet of sea bream. Of course there's the usual selection of tapas for those seeking lighter sustenance. La Goleta (2 Calle Victorio. Tel. 968 944 076) Here we have a fascinating menu with something to appeal to most tastes. Pisto murciano, a chilled dish of tomato, onion and peppers, is a lighter local dish for any time of year. Paco Pepe (14 Madre de Dios. Tel. 968 216 691) Tapas is available at the bar or enjoy the set menu for around £8 at lunchtime. If you're out for a real treat then you’ve got to try the sea bass in garlic. Pans & Company (1 Avenida de Juan Carlos. Tel. 968 904 457) Another break from shopping place with some of the best sandwiches in Murcia with lots of choicefillings. Great range of breakfasts, salads and snacks. Quick McDonalds like service but with much better grub. Jota Ele (6 Plaza Santa Isabel. Tel. 968 220 730) Jota Ele offers a vast array of tapas. You must try sizzling cod with garlic and chilli which is a house speciality, whilst a vegetarian option could be the perpetually present Spanish omelette. Jota Ele also serves a good value menú del día for €9. Carrefour Zaraiche (1 Avenida de Juan Carlos . Tel. 968 297 322) This is a self-service restaurant in the Carrefour shopping centre complex. You can get fast-food fesh from the hot plate. They also have set meals/menus. A quick and inexpensive job for breaking up the shopping.

That's a fair selection of eateries in Murcia to whet your appetites. Why not let me know if you find somewhere you want to recommend? Perhaps we can become the "Michellin" guide to eating out in Murcia City ;-)
