Sealing the Deal with Valves

By: Rob Parker

Can you imagine a world without valves? Take for example the human body. Our body is host to several valves such as the ones in our heart and in our veins. If these valves were not doing their job of regulating the flow of fluids and gases in our body, our blood would be pulled down by gravity, filling up our lower extremities and never traveling back up to our brain. Life without valves would be very difficult indeed.

Valves within the mechanical and technological world have the same purpose and that is to regulate the input and output of fluids and gases. Valves can do a myriad of things such as stop, start, mix, direct and regulate the pressure, temperature or flow of a fluid. Valves are used most commonly for regulating the flow of a substance, in some instances completely stopping its flow on demand. The ability to stop the flow of a substance allows for repair and maintenance on the equipment housing the valve.

According to the editors at Wikipedia, a rotary valve is a type of valve in which “the rotation of a passage or passages in a transverse plug regulates the flow of liquid or gas through the attached pipes”.

When looking for rotary valves, consider some of the following qualities. Valves that provide static and dynamic sealing capabilities can reduce maintenance costs substantially. Valves that can accommodate abrasive or other problematic substances like sugar are highly valuable if your business is using sticky or tough raw materials. If you manage a business in chemicals, wood products, grain/feed, or the food industry, you may want to consider the use of flex tip rotary valves.

To close the deal, invest in the valve with the quality seal. Investing in proficiently designed and highly skilled valve production will ensure that your product has a valve system that seals competently, satisfies the consumer, eases maintenance tasks and reduces repair visits. If only the task of maintaining our body’s valves was so easy!
