How to Generate Leads for Your MLM Business

Multi-level marketing has always proved to be a successful endeavor and its applications stretch into many different aspects of consumer products and services. Most owners of businesses which lend themselves to an MLM approach are confident in their abilities to convert leads into sales, but for many, generating the leads in the first place can prove to be a sticky point. Leads take a lot of time to generate on one’s own and the time consumed chasing down prospects could often be better spent in managing the conversion side of the business.

Traditional Lead Generation

Phone calls. Throughout the development of multi-level marketing businesses, the telephone has been the main instrument of lead generation. A telephone call cuts down on the amount of time used in other traditional lead generation methods (such as door to door and mail out campaigns), as well as cutting down on overhead expenses. Proper technique and a great pitch are essential for success using this lead generation method.

Door to door. The granddaddy of all MLM lead generaters, door to door tactics are probably also the least effective. While you do have the advantage of meeting a potential lead face to face immediately, door to door visits have an inherent element of risk as well as incorporating overhead expenses such as fuel costs.

Advertisements. Advertisements in newspapers and magazines, on television or radio are a proven way to generate leads. They allow a focus onto a target demographic and are brief and to the point. This technique, unfortunately, is quite expensive, and doesn’t provide the opportunity to “read” a potential lead.

Revolutionary Techniques

As it did in many areas, the information revolution offered a whole new set of prospects for owners of MLM businesses. Email campaigns and direct market advertising allow owners to target a focused, potentially huge audience with minimal overhead costs or effort.

One byword among many businesses made possible by the information age is outsourcing. Outsourcing allows individuals to focus on the parts of their business where they are the most skilled while letting other businesses take care of the more time-consuming aspects. For the MLM business, this often means hiring a company that specializes in lead generation to connect the leads with the business, so that the business owner only has to focus on the conversion of a sale in which the lead has already expressed an interest.

It is important when one approaches real time leads to bear in mind that they have expressed interest, but have not had an opportunity to mull over the decision.
