Death Rates between the Genders

By: James Wallis

According to a population research done in the middle of 2005 there were 30.7 million women living in the UK compared to 29.5 million men. This is despite the fact that there were more male births than that of female every year. It was found that there were 14000 to 25000 more number of males in each age group from the birth till the age of 20. But this ratio varied for all the ages above 30 where there was more number women compared to men. This increase in number continues up to the age of mid 50.

The ratio between women and men widen beyond mid-50 years of age due to increased death rates among men. Women are living for longer years and become very old. A survey in 2005 indicates that there were three women for ever man over the age of 90 years.

Women Live Longer Years than Men

A survey taken in 2002 in the UK indicates that men live an average of 74 years while women 7 years more and live up to 81 years. The main reason attributed to shortened life expectancy of men is due to their abusing life style. Most of the men died of lung cancer due to excessive smoking. Another factor that contributed to deteriorating health of men is excessive intake of liquor. To a smaller percentage their work-related problems also contributed to the increased death among men.

Women normally are beauty-conscious and live healthy. Most of them keep themselves fit by their normal household activities. The number of smokers and drinkers among women is comparatively less. Biologically women are tougher and proved to be better protected than men. The number of heart strokes among female was less. The female hormones protect them from heart disease till the onset of their menopause.

It is also found that normally women are less prone to heart-related diseases and normally get it 10 years later than men of their age. A recent research in the Cell and Molecular Sports Science in Liverpool John Moore University found that the women’s heart functioning of pumping the blood continues for longer years than men. It also indicates that the women do not suffer any fall in heart functioning while men in the age group of 18 to 70 years suffer 20 to 25 percent fall in heart functioning rate.

The statistics of the last 30 years indicate though there was less number of deaths among men but the percentage of deaths among men is still higher in comparison with that of women.

More Women are Inheritors

The women in the UK are living longer than men and more and more women are inheriting the wealth. A recent survey by ‘Centre for Economics and Business Research’ indicates that presently the women of the UK possess 48 per cent of the personal assets of the UK and with the current trend of progress it is predicted to reach 60 percent in the year 2025.

Do Men Ever Need to Write Wills?

A will is a written legal document detailing how the property and possessions of a person will be distributed among his/her loved ones in the event of their unfortunate death. Whether one is single, or married, they have to make a will. Without a will, the rules of intestacy shall apply and chances are that your property might not go to the persons of your choice, but to someone who you would not have liked to benefit. Besides, your spouse, children or relatives might be put into great difficulties in sorting out the problems arising from legal disputes in sharing of the property. In the case of a person who is single, he cannot help even his friends or charities in the absence of a will.

A will indicates a person’s love and concern for his loved ones, and ensures that their needs are taken care of properly after his/her death. It also allows them to choose a guardian to take care of their needs in case both the parents predecease them. The will also provides to appoint executor/s of one’s choice to manage their estate efficiently on their death.

A wail also helps the beneficiaries of the deceased to avoid or reduce the Inheritance tax payable by them. Therefore, the increased death rates among men do not obviate the need for writing a will by them, as it serves many purposes. In fact, all men need to write a will so that they could benefit persons or charities of their choice upon their death.
